Editorial Work
Jette Tybjerg edits a series of handbooks published by Politikens Forlag. All of them are interesting books on life style focusing on gardening, wine, and food. Several of these books are illustrated with photos by Casper Tybjerg.
Being an editor is in some ways similar to being a gardener. A gardener needs to plan and develop his garden. In a book the seeds are: the wise words of the author, beautiful photos, and informative illustrations. Weeding carefully is necessary in every step of the process.
For a book texts and photos need to merge successfully. For this exact reason editorial work is an area in which TTF stand out. The editor manages the close cooperation between author, lithographic artist, photographer, illustrator, proof-reader, and the project manager of the Politiken publishing house.
Authors of handbooks are usually specialists with great and highly specialised knowledge. Texts must be edited in close cooperation with the author in order to avoid compromising the personal literary style of the author. Texts must be easily accessible to readers who have no prior knowledge of the subject in question.
Photos, drawings, and captions provide an easy outline of the contents of a book. It is the editor’s task to choose and place photos that match the text of each entry. Photos need to be illustrative and explanatory, but most of all they need to be simple and beautiful.
It is the editor who provides the table of contents, the index, and the colophon. Texts and photos are given to a lithographic artist who does the lay-out for the publication. The book is sent back and forth between editor, author, and lithographic artist no less than three times before it is finally published.
The editor takes part in the final stages of the process as he checks up on reviews.
